The State of Man
There has been a massive shift in the way society expects men to present and define themselves. It is a time of gender reinvention and a fragmentation of classic masculinity. Though difficult, men have the opportunity to create and embody previously unheard of definitions of maleness. For this film, Kai revisits his earlier stills project, done in the early 2000s for Viewpoint – where once we saw men trapped and betrayed by their self-conceptions, this update now sheds a more hopeful light by focusing on unexpected possibilities rather than wrong turns.
